The Saint at Large:The Black Party 2014

Black Party graficaTHE SAINT AT LARGE, one of the world’s preeminent producers of nightlife entertainment, is known and Black Party 2014respected world wide for its infamous productions. Over its 30 year history it has retained its reputation for cutting edge innovation and staging.

The Black Party, its biggest event, held every March in

New York City is considered the Father of all large circuit events and with more than 4,000 attendees remains one of the largest gay dance parties in the world.

Its many other productions held at various times throughout the year draw crowds between 1,000 and 3,000 and consistently remain some of NYC’s largest attended, most anticipated and highly promoted events.

"Retrospectives get old quickly," notes Stephen Pevner, owner of the Saint at Large, the company that produces the Black Party and strives to carry on the legacy of the Saint, the gay temple of dance that shut its doors forgood in 1990.

The actual beginning was at the Flamingo club, in the 1970s, which hosted its own early version of the Black Party. When Bruce Mailman opened the Saint, he paid homage to it by offering his own spin on the event, presenting it as two parties in a row, Rites I and Rites II, in one crazy 1981 weekend. That doubleheader featured DJ Roy Thode and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who shot portraits of guests.

What's really changed over the years is how elaborate the production has become. "Back then, the leather iconic man had so many artistic references. It was still fresh. Thirty years later, we've more or less theatricalized it," he says. "It's like a five-act opera now!"

Highly theatrical and keenly produced, the Black Party is known and beloved for its consistently provocative and innovative themes, the full scope of which is never revealed until the night of the actual event. As usual however, clues have been thrown out along the way this year via the event's (NSFW) poster and video trailer, hinting strongly at a futuristic/clone slant. More will be revealed at the pre-event BPX: The Black Party Expo & Bazaar, which after a highly successful debut last year, expands for 2012 from one day to two.

Black Party showThis infamous annual rite of spring harks back to the days when nightlife was spelled N-Y-C. The party is going stronger than ever. With more than 5,000 attendees over 18 hours, it remains one of the largest dance parties in the world. Not to mention one of the most outrageous. Internationally respected for its notorious productions, it has retained the Saint’s reputation for cutting-edge innovation, superstar international DJs and world-class performances.
The related Expo and Bazaar is a daylong exposition held on the day of the party that pulls back the leather curtain, granting visitors access to the netherworld behind the biggest and most notorious gay dance party in the world. Attendees are free to drink, dance, ogle and gawk as they meet their favorite adult film stars and power-shop for the very best in leather and fetish fashions, adult films, books, toys, erotic art, and everything else you’ll need for those after-hours when the dance party has ended but the private party has just begun.

The Black Party will hit Roseland Ballroom for a weekend-long series of rituals and events and there are plenty of ways to get in on the fun. BPX: The Black Party Expo will feature The Hookies, which celebrates the best in the male escort industry with awards in fifteen categories. BPX and Dirty Carnival pull back the leather curtain, granting visitors access to the netherworld behind the biggest and most notorious gay dance party in the world. Expect strange and eccentric live acts, naughty carnival games, adult film stars, fetish art, fashion and all kinds of sexy eye candy. The Saint at Large has been busy setting the scene for what will be the last Black Party at Roseland Ballroom (the popular concert and event space will close later this year). The weekend will kick off early with tonight’s opening reception tonight at Rosebud Bar & Hotel Lounge featuring In Endless Nights of Love, an electronic installation including posters and rare images from events produced by The Saint At Large at Roseland Ballroom from 1991 to 2014. Large format photographs by Robert Zash will also be on display.
